Literature Text

"Ah. So what, then, are you?"
"Human. And all the better for it."
"Oh, spare me the poetry. What role is it that you're playing here? It's the hero." Her voice softened on the last word, a toxic kiss of air. "Protector of the innocent. Virtuous and kind. Brave and wise and powerful." She drew her tongue across jagged teeth, tasting the words a second time.
"What were you before? Nothing. That's why you need me. I am your purpose. What is the knight in shining armor with no dragon to slay?
Useless!
"Without me, your armor rusts away from want of use. But without you, I have everything I need and more. Without that knight, the dragon has her freedom. Sowing chaos, planting strife, cultivating discord. A noxious garden, with no fence nor bounds.
"I do not need you. You need me, like an artist needs a muse. Like a healer needs a plague."
And with that, she tore open his throat,
the coup de grâce to a deadly dance.

This is actually a really old piece, from back when I was playing with dialogue. Originally, it was set to find a place in a larger work, but now i'm not so sure. Considering its age, I'm surprised I still like it as much as I do! Critique is still welcomed, though :)

I couldn't quite decide what sort of monster I want the evil character to be. Demon? Dark wizard? I don't think a literal dragon, but perhaps...? Scarier if I don't say, I think.
